Mars SAM instrument may have discovered “Something for the History Books.”
(Update 11/26/12 – KnowledgeOrb has learned that the announcement from NASA about SAM findings will be on 12/3/12)
According to an NPR Interview with the MARS Rover principal investigator there may be a major announcement coming soon. Something “really interesting.” said John Grotzinger, principal investigator for the Curiosity rover mission, revealed to NPR that “This data is gonna be one for the history books. It’s looking really good.”
The Science instrument “Sample Analysis at Mar”s or SAM recently analyzed it’s first sample of the soil on Mars. The SAM laboratory is the most complex and comprehensive suite of instruments ever to be on the surface of Mars. The instruments looks for chemicals that would suggest at least the possibility that life could have once existed. The 2.5 billion dollar mission can look at Mars like no other mission before it. “The science team is busily chewing away on it as it comes down,” says Grotzinger.
It could be several weeks before an official announcement as the scientists need to double and triple check the data for anomalies. This is normal but in this case it seems like they may have found something unusually interesting to report…we can hardly wait. Have they finally seen signs of life on a planet outside of Earth? Did they see life itself? Have they found fossilized life? Plant life? Bacteria? Little Green Men? We will just have to wait for the results.
WOW, wonder what it is….must be big, they are double checking it to be sure….way cool.
